I’m thrilled to present Maylenis Ortega Pérez to my readers on The Breath of Cuba blog. Maylenis is a gem in Trinidad, a true beauty inside and out, and one of the most professional dance instructors I’ve come across in Cuba in my years traveling here. Her knowledge and her application of her knowledge surpass the ordinary, and I am honored to know her to bring some of her knowledge and wisdom to my readers. You’ll be seeing more from Maylenis on the blog in the coming months.
Born in Camagüey, Cuba, Maylenis, like myself, always liked everything related to art, but had the most interest in dance and theater. She attended different festivals, receiving prizes for the execution of typical Cuban dances and participation in plays, as well as declamation of poems and elaboration of children’s stories and historical stories.
At the age of 14, she entered the EIA, School of Art Instructors, in the specialty of dance, where for 
4 years she studied different dance styles, both Cuban and European, Latin American and Caribbean, with religious characteristics, fun and even Animal pantomime, as well as modern dance technique.
After graduation, Maylenis joined different schools of primary, secondary and pre-university education while continuing to be linked to the House of Culture of the municipality where she belonged, developing works for different festivals and events, whether with children and adolescents or her own presentation as dance artist.
In 2014, in addition to her work in Cuban schools, she joined a group of art aficionados belonging to the House of Culture of Primero de Enero in the province of Ciego de Avila, later working as a dancer at the Hotel Cojímar in Cayo Coco.
She joined the Folklore Folkloric Musician Folk group in 2016, already a professional, belonging to the municipality of Trinidad, Santi Spiritus, and taught dance lessons at the ARTEX company to foreign students.
After 1 year she started working as a hired worker in a private dance school for both foreign and Cuban students where she is currently working.
I met Maylenis in Trinidad, Cuba in 2015 and our shared love of her culture and dance has kept us connected over the miles and years. Currently May is living and teaching in Spain, sharing her love of Cuban culture, music and dance with the people there who are hungry to learn.
Maylenis has a dream, a beautiful vision that is very aligned with my own work, and my heart’s deepest callings. Dancing with Maylenis is more than a dance class, it is a spiritual connection of souls and a sisterhood that transcends the ordinary experiences that are easy to find. Maylenis is a true gem, a true talent, and a true teacher who loves sharing her cultural heritage and knowledge with others for reasons more than financial. You can feel how much she is invested in the work in every thing that she says and does, in the way that she speaks and in her devotion to her dream.
My intention in working with her is to help her realize that dream somehow, as it is a shared dream that we hold. She hopes someday to have her own dance and performance art school to continue collaborating in the development and exchange of cultures, and to continue to provide my dance knowledge, both practical and theoretical to Cuba and the world. I hold the vision of a cultural arts space in Trinidad with her.

Conocí a Maylenis en Trinidad, Cuba en 2015 con su esposo Lieter, quien también es un fabuloso bailarín y experto en música cubana por derecho propio.
Nací en Camagüey , Cuba, desde pequeña siempre me gustó todo lo relacionado con el arte, poniendo mas interés en la danza y el teatro. Asistí a diferentes festivales desde joven donde obtuve premios por la ejecución de bailes típicos cubanos y participación en obras de teatro, así como declamación de poemas y elaboración de cuentos infantiles y relatos históricos.
A la edad de 14 años ingresé en la EIA , Escuela de Instructores de Arte, en la especialidad de danza, donde durante 4 años estudie diferentes estilos de bailes tanto cubanos como europeos, latinoamericanos y caribeños, con características religiosas, de diversión y hasta de pantomima animal, así como técnica de la danza moderna.
Al graduarme me incorporé a trabajar en escuelas de diferentes enseñanzas, primaria, secundaria y preuniversitario a la vez que continuaba vinculada a la Casa de Cultura del municipio donde pertenecía, desarrollando trabajos para diferentes festivales y actos, ya fuesen con niños y adolescentes o mi propia presentación como artista de la danza.
En 2014 además de mi trabajo en escuelas cubanas me incorporé a bailar en grupo de aficionados al arte pertenecientes a la Casa de Cultura de Primero de Enero en la provincia de Ciego de Avila, obteniendo mas tarde trabajo como bailarina en el Hotel Cojímar en Cayo Coco.
En 2016 me incorporé a bailar en el grupo músico-danzario folclórico Leyenda Folk, ya profesional, perteneciente al municipio de Trinidad, Santi Spiritus, y a su vez impartía lecciones de baile en la empresa de ARTEX a estudiantes extranjeros.
Pasados 1 año comencé a trabajar como trabajadora contratada en una escuela de baile particular tanto para estudiantes extranjeros como cubanos donde me encuentro trabajando actualmente.
Con el tiempo espero algún día tener mi propia escuela para continuar colaborando al desarrollo e intercambio de culturas , y seguir brindando mis conocimientos danzarios , tanto prácticos como teóricos a Cuba y el mundo.
Maylenis tiene un sueño, una hermosa visión que está muy alineada con mi propio trabajo y los más profundos llamamientos de mi corazón. Bailar con Maylenis es más que una clase de baile, es una conexión espiritual de almas y una hermandad que trasciende las experiencias ordinarias que son fáciles de encontrar.
Maylenis es una verdadera joya, un verdadero talento y una verdadera maestra a la que le encanta compartir su herencia cultural y su conocimiento con otros por razones más que financieras. Puedes sentir cuánto está invertida en el trabajo en cada cosa que dice y hace, en la forma en que habla y en su devoción por su sueño. Mi intención al trabajar con ella es ayudarla a realizar ese sueño de alguna manera, ya que es un sueño compartido que tenemos.
Ella espera algún día tener su propia escuela de danza y performance para seguir colaborando en el desarrollo y el intercambio de culturas, y para continuar proporcionando mi conocimiento de la danza, tanto práctico como teórico a Cuba y el mundo. Tengo la visión de un espacio de artes culturales en Trinidad con ella.
